I picked up a couple of local books from the bookshop up the high street in Stroud recently and thought I’d give them a plug as they’re both a good read.
The first is a book all about Dunkirk Mill and is titled Dunkirk Mill and its Neighbours. It was published in 2020.

It’s full of information, drawings and photographs telling the history of Dunkirk Mill near Nailsworth and a few of the other nearby mills. You won’t find it on Amazon so try the local bookshops in Stroud and Nailsworth. It’s about £12.
I was surprised while flipping through its pages after I’d bought it to find a reference to my old website, nailsworth.com where somebody had written something about Dunkirk Mill on the old sites forum!
Old prehistoric websites aside, it’s written by Ian Mackintosh from the Stroudwater Textile Trust.
Highways, Byways and Turnpikes around Stroud
The other more recent book is titled Highways, Byways and Turnpikes around Stroud. This is a great book compiled from information by eleven local history groups.

This book has photos and information on the many old toll houses in the Stroud area along with a plethora of other information such as old maps and the original routes used by the horse drawn carriages of the past.
There’s a lot of info on the different types of horse drawn carriages and the local companies that operated them. This book has a lot more information in it than the books title suggests.
It’s about £12 from local bookshops.
Books such as these are great as they help join the many dots giving a good overview of the history and industry of an area.
