Tree felling in Hyde Woods opens new views of Chalford

Tree felling at Hyde Woods at Chalford

In the name of Ash Die Back, public safety and thinning, large numbers of trees have been removed from Hyde Woods at Chalford.

This wood has always had logging operations taking place. Some years ago after a lot of tree felling somebody put a sign on the entrance gate that simple said ‘vandals’.

This is on a somewhat bigger scale though and looks excessive. If you want a nice walk in a decent wood try the woods at Ashmeads by the Chalford playing fields.

Lots of replanting has been done with native broadleaved trees. It will be interesting to see how they turn out but it’s not going to be quick. A year has passed and it still looks terrible.

The politics of cutting down trees aside, its opened up some great views of the Chalford valley revealing some fine old buildings.

It’s worth a walk into the woods to check out the views before they disappear as the new trees grow. There’s a couple of ways into the woods, the easiest is probably by the railway bridge at the bottom of Cowcombe Hill.
