In the name of Ash Die Back, public safety and ‘thinning’ large numbers of trees have been removed from Hyde Woods at Chalford.

This wood has always had logging operations taking place, some years ago somebody put a sign on the gate that simple said ‘vandals’. This is on a somewhat bigger scale though.

Lots of replanting has been done with native broadleaved trees. It will be interesting to see how they turn out.

The politics of cutting down trees aside, its opened up some great views of the Chalford valley revealing some fine old buildings if you look beyond the industrial estate!

It’s worth a walk into the woods to check out the views before they disappear as the new trees grow. There’s a couple of ways into the woods, the easiest is probably by the railway bridge at the bottom of Cowcombe Hill.
